December 21. Longest Day 5. Here I am at my desk and, believe me, I'm not loving it.
It's a long day when you're riding it. It'll be a much longer day sitting here wishing I was riding it.
I went out to the headland to cheer the guys away and it looks as though it'll be a good year. I phoned Wanaaring and Cameron Corner yesterday, and both places say the roads are in good shape. It's the clearest weather we've had yet to start the ride, and the forecast is good all the way out. Mick Crutch and Sparks are looking like the business this year, so I have my fingers crossed for them. I'll be glued to the computer following the guys' progress (go to http://share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp?glId=0dVXhzHCF61uxXW99lp2d3jTqEksy2ful to watch Mick's SPOT reports).
Boris is only going as far as Narrabri, then he's off on his own through Terry Hie Hie for a look around, so it'll be Mick, Sparks, and Peter (a first-timer I met this morning) aiming for the Strzeleckie. The Queensland guys are starting another posse from the Sunshine Coast, and of course, The Trev - Advrider denizen and mad bastard who showed up at Cameron Corner at midnight last year - is having another crack, so there should be some stories to tell.
No stories from me, of course. I'm stuck here.
I'm off to the surgeon this morning and I'm filled with hope he'll okay my going from crutches to a walking stick. That'll at least allow me to drive and get out to do some photos.
If he doesn't, if he says I still can't put any weight at all on the leg, I'll just have to do as I'm told and continue sitting here like a great, fat walrus and twiddle my thumbs.
We'll see.
Meanwhile, nobody managed to pick the nine girls from last week's blog, and I got kicked off Advrider for inviting those guys to try (no boobular appreciation allowed over there, it seems). The girls were:
