I have a KTM 990 Adventure and I am sick of cost of rear tyres. Does anyone know if running a narrower knobby [half the price!] is ok? Mostly trail riding but a bit of roadwork to get there. Some shops say ok, some say no. Anyone doing it?

try http://www.motorcycletyres.net.au/shop/home.php?cat=264 and try the Mitas range I have them on my beemer and they are cheap and last really well. I paid 126 for a rear that was 140 wide an E09 and it lasted for about 8000Klms they are a bit sucky on wet bitumen but good on big adventure bikes. The next one down is the e07 and it is supposed to last well over 10000klms but have not used that one.

Thanks for tip. Live on Sunshine Coast but don`t do much in rain as 200kg bike is a pig in the mud so it should be ok. I`ll give it a go for that price. Gearing up to go out to Longreach in January on way to Ingham and expect to chew a few tyres. :)

I am on the sunny coast as well and just got my beemer back after hitting a tree. The big bikes certainly need some respect especially when you have to stop in a hurry.
