Queenslander's are being asked to comment on draft State Planning Regulatory Provisions applying to land at Wyaralong, identified as a potentially suitable site for a trail bike facility.
Sports Minister Phil Reeves said the draft State Planning Regulatory Provisions: Motorsport Activity Facilities (Trail Bike) on State-owned land at Wyaralong (draft SPRPs) was now open for public consultation.
“The draft SPRPs were developed as part of our commitment to provide trail bikers with more places to ride in South East Queensland,” Mr Reeves said.
Mr Reeves said the Queensland Government had been working in partnership with the Council of Mayors South East Queensland (SEQ) to identify suitable land in the south-east corner for trial bike riding facilities.
“As a result of this partnership we have identified Wyaralong as a potential site to accommodate a wide range of trial-bike riding disciplines, including recreational trail biking and motocross,” he said.
“The terrain of the site is well suited for trial bike riding as it enhances buffering against noise and dust.
“Another bonus of the site is its location as it can be easily accessed by the trial bike riders in Ipswich, Brisbane, Logan and the Gold Coast.”
Mr Reeves said the development of State Planning Regulatory Provisions was the best way to ensure that a trail bike facility was developed according to best practice by ensuring that noise, safety and environmental criteria were met.
“The increasing population in South East Queensland in recent years has resulted in a reduction of places where trail bike riders can participate without impacting on the environment and residential amenities,” Mr Reeves said.
“Trail biking is a fantastic and exciting sport but it requires careful management in appropriate environments.
“That’s why the Government is devoting land and $1 million in funding for this new trail bike facility planned for Wyaralong.
Copies of the draft SPRPs can be accessed from the Department of Communities, Sport and Recreation Services’ website: www.sportrec.qld.gov.au or from the Scenic Rim Regional Council customer service centres.
The public will have until 14 May 2010 to provide feedback on the draft SPRPs.
