From Byron To Steep Point In Under 4.5 Days
TBAM contributor and hardcore adventure rider Phil Hodgens and his trusty sidekick Bill are close to reaching their destination of Steep Point, the most westerly point of Australia, after riding flatout for four days from their departure from Byron Bay Lighthouse at the crack of dawn last Saturday. Their aim is to break the record long held by Tony Kirby, who previously made the journey by bike in four-and-a-half-days.
Sidetrack founder Tony Kirby previously set the record to cross Oz in four-and-a-half-days, can Phil and Bill break it?
"I got an email from Craig Hartley whose been out in the centre for a week or so on a Dalby moto ride. He reckons they've been chased all over the west by rain and had to head south, currently somewhere near Mildura, and he reckons theres nuthin but mud out there and we should cancel it," said Phil before leaving on his mammoth adventure ride.
Packed on his DR650 Phil when leaving Phil had 55 litres fuel, 4 tubes, a swag, toolbag, tankbag with 3 cameras, and most likely bugger all food as they virtually had no time for such comforts.
You can check out the lads route here, and follow their progress over the final 10 or so hours of their journey, and to read the blog of their progress from start to finish and check out some more pics log on to ADVRider.com, it's an epic moment in Australian Adventure Riding!
