Extreme MotoTrials battles election on Gold Coast
While Tony Abbot and Julia Gillard battle it out in the Federal Election this weekend, Australia’s best Moto Trials riders will be fighting their own battle at the 2010 Australian Moto Trials Championship in the Gold Coast hinterland.
Kicking off the inaugural ‘Trials Week’, the Australian title fight will take place from Saturday 21 to Sunday 22 August, giving motor sport fans a much-needed break from the Federal Election.
Spectators will see Australia’s top Moto Trials riders, pitting their skills against some of New Zealand’s finest in this extreme-action sport at Thunderbird Park, Mount Tambourine.
Australian Champion Colin Zarczynski and Queenslander, Boyd Willcocks, will be part of the elite group tackling a range of obstacles from two metre boulders to rocky creek beds and tree trunks over two days of intense outdoor competition.

The sport, which involves riders negotiating a series of obstacles or sections without losing points, is growing in Queensland – with riders aged from seven to 70 competing over the weekend.
‘Trials Week’ will precede the ‘Trial des Nations’, the Olympics for Moto Trials, this year to be held in Poland in September, with members of the Australian Team honing their skills before flying out.
Some modern, high-powered bikes, weighing as little as 67 kilograms will feature in the expert classes - rock jumping and ledge drop offs just part of the action fans can expect to see.
According to Motorcycling Queensland trials committee member, Scott Carpenter, the strength of the sport can be seen through the incredible response to the inaugural ‘Trials Week’.
“The fact the Australian Championship will be followed up on 25 August with a trial at Esk, and an Arena Showcase event at Carrara on the Gold Coast on 28 and 29 August demonstrates the strength of the sport in the sunshine state,” Carpenter said.
“The fact that the sport is so open to people of any age and gender is a big attraction and is adding to its popularity across Queensland.
“This sport is about tactics, balance, throttle control and stability rather than speed and power alone, so it can suit whole families and you can ride sections with obstacles to suit your ability.
“As ‘Trials Week’ unfolds we’ll have the natural setting of the rain forest at Thunderbird Park, followed by the first ever Gold Coast Arena Trial where spectators can see riders jump onto skips, concrete pipes and shipping containers in a seated arena setting at Carrara.”
The 2010 Australian Moto Trials will be held at:
