LOST ON EARTH – A story about one man’s incredible 90,000 km journey from Australia to the Arctic Circle
A book by Steve Crombie
"The world is shrinking and track marks on the surface have swallowed my soul. All I can dream about is chasing the horizon"
Join professional Aussie adventurer Steve Crombie as he rides 90,000 kilometres from Australia to the Arctic Circle via South America.
It takes him two years.
Along the way he suffers from dehydration, starvation and disease. He rebuilds his motorcycle four times. He not only tests his limits but meets the world head on – waking up behind iron bars in Tierra Del Fuego; traversing the length of the Amazon with a 260-kilogram motorcycle in tow; evading pumas in Guyana; skimming across the Caribbean on a yacht with wanted criminals; dodging bullets in Nicaragua and finally paddling a few laps in the Arctic Ocean.
Steve was bitten by the motorcycle bug at a young age, riding his first bike at a kids’ camp in Year 5 and purchasing his first when he was 20.
‘I love motorcycle riding,’ says Steve. ‘It is the freest form of adventure. You can go anywhere, any time, any place.’
Steve travelled the world in his late teens but came back to Australia to work and study, all the while dreaming of a trip around the world on his motorcycle.
‘At the same time one of my best friends, who was finally recovering from drug-induced schizophrenia, took his own life.’
Devastated, this turning point in Steve’s life gave him the impetus to make his dreams reality.
‘I finished my MBA, learnt Spanish and Portuguese, and focused all my energies on the trip. The only way I was coming home was by bike or by box.’
More than just a motorcycle story, Lost on Earth is an adrenaline rush of a travel narrative and a no-holds-barred personal journey, taking the reader to the wilds of the Americas, with a man who made the dream of a road less travelled into a reality.
Steve Crombie is a documentary filmmaker, writer and keynote speaker. He has travelled over 200,000kms as an adventurer.
Before arriving at his dream job of full-time explorer, Steve had tried everything from circus performer to financial software analyst.
At the age of 21 Steve realised that the only way for him to pursue his passion for adventure was to go out there at find it. He decided to explore the world by motorcycle and his inspiring journey – travelling from Australia to the Arctic by land and sea – took two years and is chronicled in Lost on Earth.
Steve’s other overland escapades have seen him sidestepping elephants in the Nepalese foothills, battling with Dengue Fever in Sumba, Indonesia and solo trekking across the Simpson Desert. He has participated in adventures covering over 40 countries from motorcycle journeys from the Himalayas to southern India, to island hopping voyages from Singapore to Sydney.
Today, Steve continues to spend his days conjuring up ways to sustain a life adventuring around the planet. He writes, produces and presents documentaries for Lonely Planet, Discovery Channel and the BBC. His most recent documentary, Lonely Planet’s Natural Born Traveller, was nominated for an ASTRA Award and recently won at the Asian TV Awards. He is also a regular contributor to various motorcycle and adventure magazines.
In order to motivate others to live their dreams, Steve works as an ambassador for the Inspire Foundation, which was established in 1996 in direct response to Australia’s escalating rates of youth suicide. Their aim is to prevent youth suicide and improve young people’s mental health and wellbeing.
‘The road less travelled hides landmines of experience and pleasure, all of which needed to be soaked up before I propel myself off the face of the earth.’
‘The true role of an adventurer is to share the moment and to do that you’ve got to live to tell the tale.
