More than 150 riders and crew packed the conference room of the Cherrabah Resort (near Warwick, Queensland) last night to celebrate the 2010 Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC).
Among the racers honoured for their achievements this season were the top-10 Championship Outright, headed by series winner, Toby Price, from Singleton, New South Wales (who was over the moon to receive his Pirelli tyre Outright trophy).
Price’s teammates, Jarrod Bewley and Ben Grabham, took home second and third Outright, as well as the titles in their respective classes (GP Industries Championship E1 and Pirelli E3 respectively).
The fourth Outright Polisport number plate was taken out by Ballard’s Wellard Yamaha’s, Stefan Merriman, who was the only rider this season to beat Toby Price (Merriman took the Outright and Yamaha Champ E2 Class wins at round eight).
Fifth Outright and fourth in Champ E2 went to Queenslander AJ Roberts (Honda). Yamaha rider Luke Tomlinson was third in Champ E2.
Sixth Outright was won by rising star Ben Burrell (Champ E1), who was tied on 96 points with fellow Yamaha rider, Kirk Hutton (Champ E3).
Victorian Daniel Milner (Christensen’s Off-Road) claimed eighth Outright, while Mitcham Harper (KTM) and Luka Bussa (Husqvarna) rounded out the top-10 (tied with 86-points).
It was a battle of the South Australians in Expert Outright and Polisport Expert E1, with Ivan Long (Gawler Farm Machinery/Bridgeland Motorcycles) winning a series-long war with Rhyce Ahola (SA Dirt Bikes/One Industries).
Amiel Cavalier (Husaberg) was the victor in Endura Expert E2/3 ahead of Nathan Castle.
In Motul Championship Women’s, Jessica Gardiner (Yamaha) claimed the title in her first year in the senior ranks.
Geoff Ballard repeated his win of the Championship Master’s class, while Garry Dukes (Sutto’s Husaberg Racing) won RK Chains Championship Veteran’s.
Clubman E1 and Clubman Outright was won by Thomas Jenner (Brisbane KTM).
Matt Lavis won Clubman E2/3 and Gary Tomlinson was the quickest Clubman Veteran’s.
The Junior Outright and Championship J5 Class award was presented to Lachlan Terry (AJ’s Motorcycles). Lachlan impressed the crowd at the awards presentation with a smart-looking suit and professional speech.
Casey Winston and Guy Parkinson (Advance Motors Dalby) were first and second runner-up in Junior Outright.
Championship Junior J4 was won by Mitch Kellner, Luke O’Meara came second.
Championship Junior J3 was taken out by Nicholas Lean, with Harrison Wells in second.
And Championship Junior J2 saw Todd Barry take the win over Nicolas Tomlinson.
Tonight’s presentation evening was the first of its kind for the series.
Yamaha AORC coordinator, Denise Hore, said she wished to thank all the riders, families, teams and sponsors of the 2010 series for “all their support”.
“If it wasn’t for the help of Yamaha, RK Chains, Motul, Pirelli, Polisport, Endura, GP Industries, Ballard’s Off-Road, ADB and Motorcycling Australia, this year’s championship would not have gone ahead,” Mrs Hore said.
“I would like to say a special thank you to this year’s sponsors, as well as the riders who came along to every round, for making this such a great year.
“The enduro fraternity is one big family and we hope we can continue to grow this championship to give our riders the best possible chance at succeeding in our sport.”
Mrs Hore said she expected to be in the position to make an announcement regarding the 2011 AORC on the official website in the coming weeks.
